| The UNCTAD basic search engine will locate items in the following categories:

| The default settings of the basic search parameters are predetermined at what is considered to be most appropriate for each section of the website. However, these parameters may be re-calibrated to either refine or expand the range of the search. |

For example, in the Press Section, the search parameters are set to search for Press Releases only. A search for "Africa", using the default setting would select all Press Releases containing the word "Africa" found in the Press section of the website.

For a more comprehensive search of issues related to Africa, the "whole site" option may to be selected and the drop-down menu may then be used to extend the search to "All items" which encompasses: Web pages, Meetings, Press releases, Documents and publications and TC Projects.

| • SEARCH TIPS FOR PUBLICATIONS AND DOCUMENTS |
A search may be conducted using either the UN Symbol or a string of basic keywords. |
- Sessional documents by UN Symbol |
| Together with the meeting title, the system automatically generates a list of the sessional documents relating to each official meeting. A document, or range of documents, may also be located using the official document symbol. |

For example, a search for the symbol "TD/B/49/6" will locate this specific document. A more general search for "TD/B/49/" will return a list of all documents related to the 49th session of the Trade and Development Board.
NB: Search is not case sensitive but it is important to enter the symbol connectivity and to include any slashes or parenthesis.

| The same principle may be applied to locate either a specific publication or a range of publications. |

For example, entering the full symbol of the document (i.e. UNCTAD/TDR/2002) will find the Trade and Development Report 2002. |

Alternatively, by typing only "UNCTAD/TDR/" without the year (2002), the search engine will return a list of all the Trade and Development Reports available in the on-line Digital Library. |

| - Search using keywords |
| The search facility will check both the document title and the text of the abstract, therefore, documents and publications may also be located by title or subject area using appropriate keywords. |
 |
For example, a search for documents using the term, "Trade Policy" will locate all sessional documents and UNCTAD publications which contain this precise phrase, either in the title or in the abstract.
NB: The search facility will retreive only those documents and publications that contain the exact search string entered and not any other variation of the phrase (e.g. Trading Policy or Trade Policies). For this, the Advanced Search would need to be used. | | |
